SRWMA is involved in the local community, to promote recycling and the 4Rs: Reuse, Return, Recycle and Refuse. We partner with schools, sports teams and businesses to make this happen. Here are some of the past events we have organised with support from our sponsors.

World Ocean Clean Up Days 2023

SRWMA partnered with Swire Shipping to honor World Oceans Clean Up Day and World Environmental Day. Over 2000 kilograms of rubbish was collected by 280 volunteers over 16.7 kilometres of land in every weekend of June 2023. All rubbish was separated into plastic, glass and aluminium and weighed by SRWMA, with 549 kilograms of the waste recyclable waste was collected and processed by SRWMA.

Recycling is a key part of the circular economy, helping to protect our natural resources. Each year the ‘Seventh Resource’ (recyclables) saves over 700 million tonnes in CO2 emissions, and this is projected to increase to 1 billion tons by 2030. Global Recycling Day was created in 2018 to help recognise and celebrate the importance recycling plays in preserving our precious primary resources and securing the future of our planet. It is a day for the world to come together and put the planet first.

International Coastal Clean Up Days

Clean-up days are one of the ways we get the local community involved with keeping Samoa clean and to educate people on the importance of recycling. SRWMA has teamed up with the Pacific Regional Environmental Program (SPREP) for the last three years to celebrate International Coastal Clean-up Day. This was funded through the Agence française de Développement-funded SWAP Project, in collaboration with the Australian-funded POLP Project and the KIOST Pacific Ocean Acidification Programme

School Recycling Competition

Working with schools is an important step for the association as we have found implementation and awareness go hand in hand. In order for newly introduced waste management and recycling practices to be sustainable. SRWMA believes the future of Samoa is in the hands of our younger generation, and the aim of the school recycling competition was to educate and encourage the separation and recycling of plastic and aluminum in households.

SRWMA has run recycling competitions for the last two years, challenging twelve primary schools in Upolu to see who could collect the most plastic and aluminum can recycling and become the ultimate '3R Warriors'. SRWMA pledged to export one million plastic bottles during this time and we collected and exported more than 500,00 bottles in 2021 alone. This shows the amount of plastic that is being put into the landfill by just the 13 schools and families that participated in the challenge. After delays due to COVID-19 we hit close to two million plastic bottles in June 2023 that have been separated, washed and bailed for export.
